House Cleaning in Detroit: Tips + Tricks

Updated: Oct 26, 2020

While Detroit certainly has no shortage of excellent professional cleaning services, sometimes paying a housekeeper just isn’t in the budget. Luckily, there is also no shortage of ways to trick visitors and residents alike into thinking that your house cleaning was done by a bonafide pro.

House cleaning isn’t just for bragging rights, though. Beyond the obvious sanitary benefits, a clean home also has a positive effect on your mental health. In fact, research shows that “wives with higher stressful home scores had flatter diurnal slopes of cortisol, a profile associated with adverse health outcomes, whereas women with higher restorative home scores had steeper cortisol slopes.” Put simply, a clean home is a restful home which will inevitably have a positive impact on your mental and physical health.

Read on to discover some tips and tricks for house cleaning in Detroit.

House Cleaning in Detroit: Tips + Tricks

Make Your Bed.

When you wake up in the morning, make a habit of tidying up that messy bed! Sometimes this can seem like a pointless task. After all, why should you clean something that is just going to get messed up again in a few hours?

The truth is, though, that performing this simple task will make a big difference in the appearance and tidiness of your bedroom. The bed is usually the focal point of any bedroom- it’s right there in the name! Therefore, that is the space that you want to start tidying everyday.

When you’re done, take it a step further- clear up other cluttered surfaces around the room to give it an even more pristine appearance. If you get in the habit of taking a few minutes to do this every day, it will certainly simplify your life later on when you go to tackle the deeper house cleaning tasks.

Bond with the Trash Can.

If you want your house to have that “professionally cleaned” look, then you need to forge a strong relationship with your trash can (or recycling bin). If you don’t use an item then you don’t need it, and it’s probably time to ditch it.

Sometimes, though, “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” Hey, some things are cliche because they’re true. If you no longer find yourself in need of an item that is in good condition, consider finding a person or organization to whom you can donate it.

It’s time to give yourself a little tough love and brutal honesty. The KonMari Method by Marie Kondo is a great strategy for finally parting ways with all the items that are cluttering up your home and mind. This strategy centers around one simple idea: if any particular item does not bring you joy, get rid of it.

Also, it’s important to remember to frequently throw away and replace cleaning tools themselves. For example, a 2011 study concluded that 75% of household sponges contain coliform bacteria, an indicator of potential fecal contamination in the same family as Salmonella and E. coli. Replace items like this often to avoid contaminating the very surfaces you’re attempting to clean.

Sweat the Small Stuff.

Certainly don’t drive yourself crazy, but it will be helpful to stay on top of those small tasks. Small messes inevitably turn into big messes.

For example, wash your dishes right after you use them. Or if you have a dishwasher, put those dirty dishes in as soon as you’re done eating. You may be thinking that it’s not a big deal to leave that cereal bowl in the sink for a while until you add your lunch dishes then dinner. The mess will only continue to grow, especially if there are several members of your household, and it will feel that much more daunting to tackle later on.

Be proactive in your house cleaning, and don’t let that mess get on top of you!

Organize Your Supplies.

Everyone has their go-to house cleaning supplies, especially professionals. Keep the essentials stored together for easy access.

A caddy can also be a useful tool to organize your favorite cleaning supplies. Especially if your home has multiple floors, it can be annoying to keep going up and down the stairs every time you forget a particular item. If everything you need is in a caddy, however, you can transport everything quickly and easily from room to room.

Ditch the disposable supplies.

This tip is the definition of “killing two birds with one stone.” (You already know how I feel about cliches. Sorry, not sorry.) Ditching some of those disposable supplies will allow you to clean your house more effectively and show some love to the environment!

One good alternative to paper towels and wipes is a microfiber towel. Microfiber towels are more effective and sanitary cleaning tools than their disposable counterparts. When you’re finished cleaning, toss them in the washing machine with the rest of your linens.

Get everyone involved.

Don’t tackle your house cleaning alone! It takes a village. That’s the last cliche, I promise.

Anyone who contributes to the mess can also pitch in to help clean it up. Assign each room of the house to a different member of the family. You can even try turning it into a game with a points or rewards system.

Also, if it’s financially available to you, consider booking an appointment with a professional house cleaning service in Detroit for some extra help.
