In theory, weekends for homes in Detroit are for family and unwinding. Weekends is when you should be able to sit back and relax. Unload the stresses of the week and work while spending time with family and friends. However, for some, weekends may be the only time there is to get things done. It may be the one change to tackle projects and errands that had been overlooked all week long. In case you are looking for ideas and even if you are all caught up with chores, here are 5 weekend project ideas you can do.
1. Laundry
Yup, we said it, laundry. For some homes in Detroit, it is no big deal but for others, myself included, it is the universe’s way of punishing us for existing. Ok, that a bit dramatic but it is some kind of punishment. I could swear that between the time you take your clothes out of the closet, to the time you wash, fold and get ready to put them back, your closet shrinks. Even though you lost half of your socks, one of each pair, there is no room for the clothes that you have washed.
To make things a little easier, try to have more than one hamper and separate colors as you wear them. Enlist the help of your family for folding and assorting the clothes after you wash them. Distribute the clean stuff promptly. Get it done, and over with. DONE DONE DONE.
2. Organize Your Pantry
We like the idea of clear containers. This way, you can see what you have and where it is. You can get clear containers for cereal, grains, pastas, etc. These we found at www.target.com
In your pantry or out in your kitchen, you may have collected appliances that you don’t need anymore. If you are no longer using it, it’s time to find it a better home. You can donate it to Goodwill or try to sell it online. Facebook Marketplace is a good place to sell items and have someone pick it up. You can give it away on Facebook too. Either way, you would be decluttering your space, keeping an item out of the landfill, and filling someone’s need.
3. Declutter your closet
I am one of those crazy home owners in Detroit who doesn’t buy a lot of clothes but still have a bunch. On top of that, when I do, well it looks like everything else I already own. I have so many black pants, and grey sweats that to others, I look like a minimalist. If you have 4 pairs of the same color pants and general style item, keep the one, or two, that fit and flatter you best.
A trick I heard about is to hang every hanger the wrong way and only change them as you use the clothing item. Whatever is still facing the wrong way at the end of a year, get rid of if. If you didn’t wear it in that year, well you don’t love it. We won’t talk about shoes though.
We found these at Amazon
Wonder Hanger Platinum,
Space-Saving Closet Organizers,
4 Pack, Chrome
4. Declutter the bathroom
Every once in a while, we collect and keep a few too many products. To declutter, make it a point to use all of your half fill bottles first. I actually had two half bottles of the same conditioner open!
Make up and beauty products do expire. Although companies are not required to have an expiration date listed, products do have an expiration date. In 2005, the European Commission introduced the PAO, “Period After Opening”. The PAO symbol looks like an open jar with a number inside. This indicates the number of months after opening that the manufacturer feels the product will be good for after the seal is opened. Perfumes lose something too! The fragrance may even change after a couple of years. If you have products that have changed colors, that were white and are now slightly yellow, those need to go.
5. Paint a Room
One of the cheapest & easiest changes you can make to a room is to paint it. I guess if you are dealing with having to move heavy stuff, you may not think it’s easy. Painting a room can completely change the feel of it, even if you continue to use all existing furniture and accessories.
Every year, paint companies announce the “Color of the Year” all of them putting out a variation or contrasting color of Pantone’s Color of the year which you can use for inspiration. More importantly than the color of the year is the color that you like and that make you feel good. Colors have been proven to influence mood and emotions. A soothing color in the bedroom can promote relaxation and help you wind down and get ready to sleep.
For room color inspiration you can go online to paint company’s websites, designer websites, Pinterest, etc. Design magazines are a great source of inspiration too and since they usually follow a style, you can choose the magazine that showcases design ideas that most appeal to you.
Hopefully most of your weekends will be spent relaxing and enjoying your friends and family this fall. Maybe just sleeping in and taking naps (sounds way better). I rarely nap but when I do, it’s usually on a lazy Sunday afternoon. Taking a few weekends to finish those projects will help you feel completely guilt free those fun, relaxing, well deserved weekends.
