How to Plan Your Garden Beds

Updated: Oct 26, 2020

The summer is here and the worst has passed (we hope). Either way it's time to stay on top of your lawn care services so that you can start enjoying some fresh air with family and friends. There is no safer and better way to do that in Washtenaw County Michigan than in your own backyard.

But, have you really taken a good look back there? When was the last time you pulled out your green thumb to give the outside of your home some tender, love, and lawn care services in Washtenaw County? Well we want to make sure you know exactly how to prep and pretty up those garden beds! Here are:

4 Lawn Care Services Tips to Improve Your Garden Beds

The growing zone

Determining your growing zone is essential because it will help you make the right choice when it comes to plants. Planting Zones are the conditions of a given place that allow plants to survive. While there are plants that thrive in multiple zones, there are some picky ones that want conditions to be just the way they like them.

Let There Be Sun!

Another thing to consider when choosing your plants is sun light. Even plants within the same zone may have different sun requirements. When Planning your garden, take a day or two to figure out how much sun lite your planting area will get. Also note the times at which it gets sun. Is it morning or afternoon sun.

Where There is Water, There's a Way

Pay attention to the requirements for each plant. Also, when putting in your plants, try to keep together plants with similar water requirements. You don’t want to plant a water loving plant next to cactus as you may overwater and rot your cactus.

Plant Size Matters

Calculate the size of your bed and plant accordingly. Plants usually come with tags that will tell you how deep to plant deep and how much space you should leave all around them in anticipation to their full-grown size. Try to keep the tallest varieties towards the back so that all of their plant neighbors can get the sun they need.

Now that we are done with the basics, and the not so fun part of gardening, go plan and plant away. Gardening is fun, rewarding, and very therapeutic.

For more zoning information, visit the USDA website. Also, visit your local nursery, they can be a great source of information and will guide you to the best selections for your project. Remember to bring in a picture so that they can visualize the space with you.
